Smoother runway for air cargo logistics T.E. RAJA SIMHAN


At last, the air cargo logistics industry can look for some shiny days ahead. The way things are being speeded up suggests that the Government is serious about improving the industry’s standards to international levels.

The KC-135 and S&OP


 Following the interview with Paul Woodlief on CPFR, Dr. Brady wanted to continue the conversation--so they did!

How India's airline market lost its way by Vinay Bhaskara


When India’s Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, and SpiceJet all recently reported large net losses for Fiscal Year 2012 on the heels of Kingfisher’s steep downsizing in February and March, it came as a surprise to many people around the globe who considered India, and its burgeoning airline industry, one of the world’s greatest success stories. But as with India’s economic growth story (GDP growth in the first quarter of 2012 was a (relatively by Indian standards) anemic 5.3%), beneath the shiny veneer lies a tottering industry that must take drastic steps in order to ensure its future. But before one can explore the solutions to these issues, it is helpful to look at what exactly created the problems.
Any attempt to assign the collective failure in the Indian airline market to one specific reason is highly disingenuous; it took a special confluence of factors to create this mess. Some of the major factors are outlined below.

Cabinet nod for AP, Bengal major port projects likely this fiscal


Cabinet nod for the proposed two new major ports at Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal is expected before the end of the current financial year, said Mr G.K. Vasan, Minister of Shipping.
Delivering his inaugural address at the National Conclave on Shipping, he said a target has been set to award projects to create 244 million tonnes of capacity spread across 42 projects at an estimated cost of Rs 14,500 crore during 2012-13.

‘Maritime sector needs trained personnel'


There are great opportunities for trained personnel in the port and maritime sectors, as more ports are coming up both on the east and west coasts, but there are very few training institutes to meet the requirement, according to Capt. Sriram Ravi Chander, Chief Operating Officer of the Visakha Container Terminal Private Ltd (VCTPL).
He was speaking at a function on Monday on the occasion of handing over certificates to students of the Visakha Institute of Port Management, being run by the VCTPL.

L&T bags Rs 483-cr order to build 4 vessels


L&T Shipbuilding has bagged orders worth Rs 483 crore to build four specialised commercial vessels. The orders, from Halul Offshore Services Company, Qatar, are for design, construction and commissioning of two platform supply vessels (PSVs) and two anchor handling, towing, supply and support vessels (AHTSSVs). The PSVs will be equipped for firefighting, rescue and standby, offshore supply and oil recovery. The vessels will have diesel-electric propulsion and DP2 dynamic positioning capability.

Nine months on, SpiceJet loves its Bombardier Q400 aircraft


Just a little over nine months ago, Indian low fare carrier SpiceJet took delivery of its first Bombardier Q400 turbo-prop on August 26th last year, and commenced commercial flights with the aircraft on September 21st.

In a recent internal publication, aircraft manufacturer Bombardier, claimed a 99.8% despatch reliability for the Q400 at SpiceJet, an enviable number considering the high and hot conditions the aircraft operates in.
